IMYC responds specifically to the needs of 11 to 14 year olds by providing independence and interdependence in their learning through discrete subject learning and themes, encouraging learning that helps them make connections that are relevant to their own lives. It involves active, skills-based learning, promotes self-reflection and the opportunity for students to make sense of their learning, and encourages students to use the very latest media platforms to present their learning and express their thinking.
The hallmark of IMYC is the step by step integration of a "Big Idea" into core curriculum that creates an inter-disciplinary learning experience for students. The school year is divided into units. Each unit is developed around a “Big Idea,” or conceptual theme whose meaning is explored across subject matter. Students create projects at the “Exit Point” of each cycle to demonstrate what they’ve come to understand about the theme and its relationship to their core subjects of study.
The in depth exploration of conceptual themes, integrated across subject matters, is an excellent preparation for the International Baccalaureate Curriculum in the high school. Through IB, students are expected to generate independent research projects, developing a critical understanding of the foundation of knowledge and critical thinking, and also integrate their work in the Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) component of IB. It is an intensive course of study, but one our students are prepared for through IMYC. It also has a practical payoff: In Texas, successful completion of the IB Diploma Program translates into beginning college as a sophomore.
